CENTRAL AMERICA & MEXICO

Four months after 9/11/01, I began traveling internationally. Meeting people of different cultures is the best education in the world. Costa Rica was my first big gig. I published over six articles on this friendly, biodiverse nation. WildBird (june 2004), Tico Times, and the Richmond Times Dispatch are a few of my outlets. Besides Mexico City and the border towns, in the heart of Tamaulipas lies a jewel, El Cielo Cloud Forest. This UNESCO site teems with birds and other wildlife. One autumn, I had the priviliege of exploring this unusual and primitive area with a group of nature-minded Texans.

Because it is so new and vital, I have created a separate PANAMA Gallery.

***When I asked which is my favorite journey, I often reply, "The latest one."
Without question, one of my best expeditions was my recent one to Panama.
Besides Latinos, I mingled with indigenous Ngobe Bugle, Kuna, and Embera Indians.
I witnessed the history of the Canal Zone and navigated in a skiff amongst gigantic commercial vessels within minutes of a jungle.
In the wild Darien, a small group and I spent over 5 hours jungle trekking in search of the Harpy Eagle, Panama's national bird.
Fresh, delicious seafood, fruits, and vegetables sustained my energy.
Convenient for Americans, the U.S. Dollar is the main currency.
Panama is on EST and below the hurricane belt. Numerous superlatives distinguish this place, a wee smaller than South Carolina.

 • Ah, the lure of Corcovado in southwestern Belize on the Osa Peninsula...
 • One of my most memorable adventures ever was being harnessed and hoisted manually up a stinking toe tree (some call it Guapinol)to the canopy.
Corcovado Tent Camp
 • With nothing but a rope, pulley, helmet, diaper, and harness, away we go up to a stinking toe tree canopy and then a spine tingly descent.
Osa Peninsula
 • After our small plane landed on a dirt runway, we walked Survivor-style 2.5 miles to our tent camp. A young man and a horse-driven cart delivered our luggage.
 • Environmentally friendly Corcovado Tent Camp blends in with the surrounding jungle.
 • I can still hear the waves caressing the shore, smell the fragrant blossoms, taste fresh papaya, touch a harmless thick-skinned iguana, and feast my sights on the sunsets. Corcovado
 • A church is one of the 5 main components of a Latin American villa.
GRECIA (village)
 • A typical scene along a country road is a fellow and his ox-driven, hand-painted cart. An hour or so outside San Jose
 • Delmonte Banana Plant assembly line near Tortugero
 • Farmer's Market in San Jose...I can almost taste the freshness of these tomatoes.
 • Farmer's Market in San Jose - packaged sausage
 • A delectable repast of fresh tilapia. I could do without the pink umbrella.
 • Hey, Mon...Tortugero boatmen
 • My wonderful guide, Luis, flaunting a lovely tropical flower. He sported 15 earrings in an ear, one for each year he had worked in tourism.
 • Children are respected highly in Latin America. These youngsters were having a ball in a hole. Tortugero
 • Wild lavender orchids bloom in Tortugero.
 • TORTUGERO (means turtle in Spanish) VILLAGE
 • ARENAL VOLCANO
Although we did not witness an eruption, there was a rumble. We did find a dead fer de lance (poisonous snake) and rescued a tiny gator crawling along a busy road.
