CURACAO

CARIBBEAN's SECRET GEM

Forty- four miles off the Venezuelan coast lies a secret gem. Part of the Netherland Antilles and the Caribbean's Leeward Islands, Curacao is a rare place. Below the hurricane belt and favoring balmy breezes, it is a desirable year-round destination. Downtown Willemstad, capital of the N. Antilles, is one of the world's most beautiful quaysides. Years ago, the governor's doctor prescribed painting the buildings bright colors to cure his patient's migraines. Four little bridges allow pedestrians to cross from the Punda to Otrabanda section of town. From their boats or floating markets, Venezuelans sell fresh vegetables, fruits, and seasonings. Aromas waft from the Old Market where cooks brew goat stew, jerk chicken, and other traditional dishes. Angelica's Kitchen, the Caribbean's only cooking school, is a wonderful dining adventure. At Seaquarium's Dolphin Academy, physically impaired children and others can swim or dive with bottlenose dolphins. The western end is a treasure trove of hidden coral beaches, ocean spray, and Mt. Cristoffel, the island's highest point. People are exceptionally friendly and clean-cut. Come explore - it is only a 3-hour flight from Miami.
